Who is Yoga for ?

May 30, 2022

In short: Yoga is for everybody and every BODY. Yoga is not just for the young and flexible, although sadly this is often the image that we get from social media. Yoga is suitable and open to all ages, all sizes, all abilities, and for all stages of life.

There is no one-size-fits-all yoga practice, and the practice can be modified in numerous ways according to one’s individual needs. There is no one right or wrong way to practice as long as health and safety are ensured.

For some, yoga is a way to improve their fitness and become stronger and more flexible. For some, it is a way to deal with stress and take care of mental health. For some, yoga is a more spiritual practice, and this might be the primary focus of their practice. For many, it is a combination of these. We all need and want different things from our yoga practice, and the beauty of yoga is that you can take what you want from it – how it serves you best.

Learning about ourselves through yoga

On the mat we are not competing against others, competing for attention, or competing against ourselves. We might be battling with tight muscles, wobbling balance, or the fluctuations of the mind but these are all part of us. Being curious about all the sensations that arise from the poses and accepting them takes us closer to knowing ourselves; Yoga is a way for us to settle down into our body, quiet the mind, and just listen. Sometimes it is about letting go of expectations and accepting the practice as it is on that day. If we constantly focus on improvement, striving forwards, and practicing to get better we might miss the sensations in the present moment.

Mindful yoga practice teaches us to become better embodied and present both in our body and mind. Although the goal of our yoga practice might be to improve our physicality or our mental state, there is also a great emphasis on self-acceptance; Accepting who we are and practicing within our own limitations (we all have some!).

Yoga is truly for everyone to enjoy and at Hilltop Wellness Resort in Phuket, we love to help people find their own practice or deepen the practice they already have. If you would like to join in our yoga journey and community, drop us a message or pop in at the resort!

Warm greetings from the Hilltop Wellness Resort Yoga Team!
